Recently printed the three designs which comprise the Barcelona Shawl collection. As a visitor to Barcelona some years ago, and a keen walker, I became obsessed with the varying concentric circle designs impressed into the grids of the city pavements. By facilitating the action of walking, pavements are intimately connected to the human body; they are scaled in proportion to the body, and receive the body’s measured contact with the earth. The rhythms of pulse, breathing and blinking are accompanied by the sound of beating feet upon these grids of concrete.
As a textile designer, the rhythms of the Barcelona pavement patterns, the repetitive circles and squares strewn occasionally with trash, provided opportunities for externalizing these ideas onto the surface of silk. The double-sided shawl mimics the parallels of the pavements in the Barcelona streets, and the combination of three shawls further reflect my experience of walking through adjacent zones within the city, defined by different pavement patterns.
